Instead of expanding the Desktop toolbar to show any icons, I reduced its size and just use the double arrow to open a pop-up menu with all the items. Open a PDF and no more Tool Pane! Check it and the File, Edit, etc.. I use it In Windows 8.1 because it lets you add folders as well.
